What is Music Therapy? In a nutshell, Music Therapy is the use of music to change behaviors. A recognized professional health discipline, music therapy incorporates music (in all its forms) as the therapeutic stimulus to reach non-musical goals. Our music therapists' use scientifically validated treatment strategies and interactive music experiences to foster development in the following areas:

  • We provide individual services in a direct and consultation model. Music therapy group services are available for social skills and development of music fundamentals.

    Music Therapist
    Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC) is the nationally recognized credential for music therapists and is awarded by Certification Board for Music Therapy.

    Scientifically validated
    At SLTA our music therapists apply the growing body of theoretical and clinical research related to how music impacts changes in cognition, motor development, sensory responses, communication and psychosocial functioning. This treatment approach is unique to Neurologic Music Therapy, and is a specialization within the field of music therapy.

    Consultation
    Consultation services may be provided for; Individuals receiving direct service to help with generalization of skills developed in music therapy sessions or as the primary service in an education model.

    Social Skills
    Music Therapy Social Skills groups combine children in small groups, who could benefit from developing similar social skill areas and are highly motivated by music. The music therapist uses music experiences and interventions to promote the development of social skills and provide children with creative opportunities for emotional, verbal and non-verbal expression.

    Fundamentals
    Music fundamentals groups are for individuals with developmental disabilities who could greatly benefit from music education, but need adaptations and support from a music therapist to be successful. In a group setting, participants will have the added benefit of cooperative learning. Performance opportunities may be provided.
